Aleppo soap is an authentic and naturalproduct, without dyes, without synthetic perfumes, without palm oil or preservatives.
Its virtues for the skin have been recognized since millennia.
The origins of this miraculous soap
The origins of Aleppo soap date back to antiquity. It was first created in the Syrian city of Aleppo.
In its traditional cubic form, it is known to be the oldest soap in the world.
It was the crusaders, in the Middle Ages, who brought back to the West the "real toilet soap". They discovered it in the East and more precisely in northern Syria. Aleppo soap spread over the Mediterranean rim of France in the fifteenth century.
A good Aleppo soap should not have a greasy texture. On the outside, it has a beautiful brown color, while on the inside, its heart is green and exudes a scent of olive oil and laurel.
The manufacture of Aleppo soap
This all-natural soap is still made today following the same process developed more than 2000 years ago! Professional soap makers use exactly the same artisanal methods as their ancestors.
The ingredients of the original recipe are: olive oil, water, vegetable soda, and laurel berry oil.
The different phases of aleppo soap manufacturing
Saponification begins by heating the water and soda in a copper cauldron. Then the olive oil is added. The preparation is then heated for about 12 hours, then left to rest.
The next day, the contents of the cauldron are heated between 80 ° C and 100 ° C while mixing. The previously filtered laurel berry oil is then added.
A soap paste is obtained which is rinsed several times with salt water to rid it of any trace of soda. The rinsing water is removed from the cauldron and then recycled. All these steps are part of the saponification process: it is the natural chemical reaction between the oils and the soda that transforms the mixture into soap molecules.
The soap paste is spread out on a smooth stone floor. The soap makers cover it with a wooden board on which they climb to equalize the thickness of aleppo soap. Again, the preparation is allowed to rest.
Once solidified, the dough is manually cut into blocks of soaps (cubic shape for the traditional recipe). Each soap is stamped with the manufacturer's seal.
The soaps are then stored in airy cellars, sheltered from the sun, where they will slowly mature. This is the drying phase that lasts at least 9 months. During this period, the soaps oxidize on the surface and take on a yellow/brown color as they dry, while the inside of the soap remains olive green.
Which Aleppo soap to choose?

The more it contains, the more moisturizing it is, and the more expensive it is too. For sensitive or dry skin, without other special worries, a soap with 12% laurel berry oil is sufficient.
