An anecdote about the discovery of Qin Shi Huang's army

Unlike the monochrome image we have today, these statues were originally painted in bright, vibrant colors. Archaeological research shows that Qin Dynasty craftsmen applied a range of pigments to bring every detail to life.

The warriors sported red robes, green armor, realistic faces, and other colors such as blue, pink, and purple. These paints, called "lakes" by specialists, were made from minerals and organic matter.

However, this colorful splendor quickly disappeared after the discovery of the statues in 1974. When the statues were exposed to air and light for the first time in millennia, the pigments deteriorated within hours or days. The organic binders that held the pigments in place disintegrated, leading to the irreversible loss of colors. This is why the terracotta warriors we see today appear mainly in shades of grey.

To preserve what remains of the paintings, archaeologists and conservators use advanced technologies, such as spectrometry and electron microscopy, to analyze trace pigments and understand their chemical composition. They also apply innovative conservation techniques to stabilize the remaining paint fragments. For example, some fragments are treated with chemical consolidants that strengthen the pigments and prevent further degradation.

These conservation efforts allow us not only to imagine the original and vibrant appearance of the soldiers, but also to appreciate the incredible craftsmanship of the craftsmen of the time. Each warrior in the Terracotta Army was not only a work of art in terms of sculpture, but also a masterpiece of painting. This dimension adds an extra depth to our understanding of the artistic and cultural legacy of the Qin Dynasty.
