Do you know how this army was discovered?
In 1974, peasants were digging a well in Shaanxi province, near Xi'an, when they came across fragments of terracotta. What they found turned out to be one of the world's greatest archaeological treasures : the Terracotta Army. This serendipitous discovery revealed thousands of statues of soldiers, horses and chariots, buried with the emperor to protect him in the afterlife.
Another fascinating anecdote is related to the minute details of each warrior. Each statue is unique, with distinct facial expressions, hairstyles, and postures, suggesting that they may have been modeled after real soldiers of the time.
Finally, although the Terracotta Army is impressive in its own right, historians believe that it represents only a small part of the emperor's funerary complex, which remains largely unexplored. Legends have it that the Emperor's Tomb contains rivers of mercury and mechanical traps to deter raiders, adding an extra layer of mystery and intrigue to this archaeological wonder!
